Most parents love their children and are doing the best they can to raise them. They use the rewards and punishment approach that they learned in their family of origin and which is so pervasive in our society. That’s the way everyone parents right?
Parents today are also busy, stressed and often at their wits end, but they put their heads down and press on. In spite of all this effort and good intentions, the children seem to become more and more self-focused with a growing sense of entitlement. Where they would once clean up their room for $5.00, but now it takes $20.00. It seems as if they won’t do anything without asking “What’s in it for me?” Tired parents now become discouraged and hopeless. What’s a parent to do about this?
The Mission • • • • •
We are on a mission to convert parents from the overuse of a reward/punishment system ... to a "parent the heart" approach.
The Strategy • • • • •
We now have a cadre of trained PARENT COACHES. The program involves reading, video training, online discussion and assignments as well as field work with a family. One of our coaches has been helping the parents of an 8 year-old boy who has a major anger problem. He gets so angry that he will often hit his mother. The coach is working with the parents to develop a specific plan to help this child develop the character qualities needed to address the anger responses to everyday challenges. The work is being done in the heart.
Note: If you want to learn more about how to train the heart of a child, download the 38 free pages of Parenting Is Heart Work. You can do that from the banner on the left side of this page. ... to a "parent the heart" approach.
The Plan • • • • •
PARENT COACHES give concentrated attention to parents over 8 weeks and help them develop a plan for change in one child. They also provide content, support, accountability and practice sessions. We plan to train 100 or more new coaches in 2017. In order to do this, we’re going to equip a group of TRAINERS.
The Goal • • • • •
We’re asking the Lord to raise up one or more PARENT COACHES for every Church in the world. Now that’s an huge goal, but we’re going to move in that direction. Wouldn’t it be amazing to see God bring this into being!
