Anger, Anxiety and Other Emotions
Every person, child and adult, needs a plan for dealing with three categories of emotions, anger, disappointment, and anxiety.
Every person, child and adult, needs a plan for dealing with three categories of emotions, anger, disappointment, and anxiety.
Anger is associated with frustration, blocked goals, violated rights, an acute sense of justice, and hurt. If not addressed it can turn into bitterness and resentment. You’ll know that anger isn’t managed well when you see episodes of rage, the reaction is greater than the trigger warrants, and when children either attack themselves or others. They need help.
Disappointment takes place when common desires grow from wishes, to desires, and then to demands. The common desires become expectations and then appear to be demandingness. When not managed well, disappointment not only makes the person unhappy, but they then tend to make others unhappy as well. Children who experience high levels of disappointment need help.
Anxiety comes in many forms. When it hinders a person’s well-being or ability to function well, then it can become a serious problem. Anxious thoughts and feelings can run wild. Many children experience greater anxiety than their character has the ability to manage. In this case, they need help.
When parents look deeper than the behavior, they work in the heart which provides bigger and longer lasting solutions. One of the challenges is that parents are also dealing with their own emotions. When one person is upset, others in the room feel the tension and tend to feel upset as well.
Children, and parents, need specific, practical, and often personalized solutions. A solution for one child may not work for another. But there are helpful tools you can use to help your children manage their hearts well even in the midst of major emotional challenges.
